Several visitors to the Greifenburg bathing lake in Carinthia developed an itchy skin rash with small red spots after swimming, as the municipality explained with reference to the Austrian Federal Ministry.

The affected swimmers showed symptoms after their visit to the Greifenburg bathing lake, according to a report in the Kronen Zeitung, that are medically known as bathing dermatitis or cercarial dermatitis. The Austrian Federal Ministry explains: „Die Zerkarien-Dermatitis wird von Larven von Saugwürmern der Gattung Trichobilharzia verursacht und kann im Sommer nach dem Baden in freien Gewässern auftreten.“ The disease manifests itself through small red spots on the skin and intense itching.
