The British pay-TV provider Sky is taking over the media and entertainment division of broadcaster ITV for the equivalent of around 1.9 billion euros (1.6 billion pounds).
With a £1.6 billion (approximately €1.9 billion) deal to acquire ITV's media and entertainment division, Sky is significantly expanding its offering in the UK. After months of negotiations, Sky reached an agreement with ITV on the purchase of ITV Media & Entertainment. The deal includes the streaming service ITVX and ITV's free-to-air channels. ITV's production division is not part of the agreement.

Background on buyer and seller: ITV is the UK's largest commercial television broadcaster, but as a public service broadcaster it has a statutory remit to serve the public. The TV channels are to remain free-to-air and ITVX is to continue to be offered free of charge, according to reports. Sky belongs to the US group Comcast and is one of the country's most important pay-TV providers.
