After heavier rainfall, water levels on the Rhine have risen slightly but remain well below the lows recorded in 2018, according to the German Inland Shipping Federation (Bundesverband der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt, BDB).
The Kaub gauge on the Middle Rhine and the Duisburg-Ruhrort gauge for the Lower Rhine, both particularly relevant for assessing navigability, are still far below the previous record lows from 2018, a federation spokesperson said in Duisburg. As a result, the situation on the river has eased only marginally despite isolated precipitation in recent days.
For inland shipping, this means the transport situation remains tense. When water levels are low, cargo vessels cannot sail fully loaded on the Rhine, which noticeably limits the volume of goods transported – from coal and building materials to chemical products and containers. The BDB is therefore continuously monitoring developments at the key gauges.
