Cologne, 01 August 2026

Forecasters have revised their outlook for the Rhine near Cologne, saying the water level at the Duisburg-Ruhort gauge is no longer expected to fall below the previous historic low of 153 centimeters despite the ongoing drought.

Revised outlook at Duisburg-Ruhort

Earlier projections had raised the prospect of an unprecedented low at the Duisburg-Ruhort gauge, a key reference point for shipping on the Rhine. According to the latest update, those expectations have now been withdrawn: "Unterschritten werden soll er entgegen vorherigen Erwartungen aber nun nicht mehr," officials said, indicating that the gauge should not slip beneath the 153-centimeter mark recorded previously.
