Low water on the Rhine uncovers hidden objects and slows inland shipping

Economic consequences

The economic consequences are, in the assessment of economists, serious. Stefan Kooths of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy estimates the loss of value added in the third quarter at roughly one to two billion euros. The sectors primarily affected are industrial operations along the river that depend on regular ship deliveries.

The chemical industry is responding to the changed conditions with specialized vessels. One example is the "Stolt Ludwigshafen", which was developed by the chemical group BASF and Stolt Tankers specifically for Rhine transport at very low water levels — with a wide, hydrodynamically optimized hull and a weight-optimized design. Such new vessels are intended to secure supply to the plants even when conventional freighters can no longer sail fully loaded.

Specialized vessels as a response

At the same time, transport experts such as Thilo Schaefer are observing the structural risks of low water. Schaefer points out that inland shipping, despite its efficiency, is bound by clear gauge limits. Even a drop of just a few centimeters can significantly reduce the permitted cargo volume. As a result, part of freight traffic in such phases inevitably shifts to trucks and rail, placing additional strain on logistics.

Energy supply is also coming under pressure. Coal-fired power plants in the interior of the country depend on regular ship deliveries, and heating oil and fuel transports also run to a considerable extent via the river. Falling gauge levels force shipowners to reduce tonnage or switch to alternative routes. This makes logistics more expensive and ultimately feeds into consumer prices.

Authorities and monitoring

The Federal Institute of Hydrology has been recording the development for months and regularly exchanges its data with the waterway and shipping offices. The Düsseldorf District Government is also involved in the monitoring and coordinates measures in the event of further falling gauges. The goal is to maintain shipping traffic for as long as possible without compromising safety on the waterway.

In the Leverkusen area and along other stretches, members of the public have also made unusual finds in recent days. Parts of old ship hulls, individual historical anchors, and other objects were reported to WDR Fernsehen and featured in reports. The responsible monument authorities are examining which pieces can be professionally recovered and, where appropriate, secured for museum collections.

Outlook on further developments

The meteorological situation does not suggest any rapid easing. Precipitation in the Rhine catchment area is not in sight so far, and water levels therefore remain strained. Observers such as Fabian Spieß see the current phase as a further warning signal of the vulnerability of German inland logistics to climatic extremes.

Overall, the low water on the Rhine is having two very different effects: on the one hand, it is rewriting economic and transport data and burdening the export-oriented industry, while on the other hand it is also yielding unusual archaeological and historical finds. Both aspects will shape the public image of the crisis in the coming weeks.
