On World No Tobacco Day, Germany's Federal Drug Commissioner Hendrik Streeck called for a substantial increase in tobacco taxes to combat rising nicotine consumption among young people.
The price of cigarettes and vapes must rise "noticeably," Streeck told the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe. He argued that higher prices are a proven way to deter young people from starting to smoke and to help existing smokers quit.
Streeck, a CDU politician, warned that Germany is losing ground in tobacco prevention among youth. He described it as cynical to reject a significant tobacco tax increase with the argument that fewer smokers would reduce tax revenue.
"Das ist kein Einnahmeausfall, den man beklagen sollte. Das ist ein gesundheitspolitischer Erfolg, den man erreichen muss," Streeck said, framing reduced smoking rates not as a revenue loss to lament but as a public health success to achieve.
