Söder pelted with tomato at anniversary celebration in Bernau am Chiemsee

The police in Rosenheim, which is responsible for the area, declined to comment on the incident when asked by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. There was likewise no official statement on the attack from the Bavarian state government initially.

The CSU chairman himself commented on his appearance in Bernau on the platform X, without mentioning the incident. He wrote there: „Bin selbst seit der Kindheit immer wieder gerne hier“. The post was accompanied by a photo from the anniversary celebration.

No statement from police

According to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the attack had no consequences: the incident turned out to be harmless. Söder was not injured after the throw and was apparently able to continue the event.

The „Bild“ newspaper reported, citing eyewitnesses and a video, that the attacker had suddenly jumped out from a bush and run toward the CSU leader. According to the report, the attack took place in the immediate vicinity of the festival grounds.

Background: 1,100 years of Bernau am Chiemsee

Bernau am Chiemsee is celebrating the 1,100th anniversary of the municipality this year. The milestone was marked with a festive event attended by Söder as a guest. The municipality is located on the eastern shore of Lake Chiemsee in the Rosenheim district.

According to initial findings, the attacker is a lone individual. According to the information available, there were no further arrests and no further disruptions to the event.

Investigations underway

From the State Chancellery, it was said only in the evening that Söder had been able to attend the festival program as planned. Nothing was initially communicated regarding possible security consequences for future appointments.

According to dpa information, the investigation has been taken over by the Bavarian State Office of Criminal Investigation. Clarity about the attacker's motive, origin, and any possible political background is expected only after the ongoing investigations.
