After a software glitch in voter registration in New Jersey, US President Donald Trump has called the American election system "manipulated," while the state's Democratic governor, Mikie Sherrill, rejected the accusations and announced an internal investigation.

Background: Software glitch in the voter register

The day before, it had become known that the voter register of the state on the US East Coast had erroneously registered around 6,600 people who are not US citizens between June 2023 and June 2024. Sherrill explained on the platform X that the cause was a "serious software glitch" during applications for driver's licenses or ID cards. She had ordered an internal investigation immediately after the error became known and initiated the removal of the affected persons from the voter register.

Trump reacted on his platform Truth Social, calling the US election system "manipulated." On Wednesday morning (local time), he also wrote there: "SAVE AMERICA!!!". To this day, he does not recognize his defeat in the 2020 presidential election against Joe Biden. Observers see the current statement as another example of Trump's attempt to undermine trust in the US election process.
