Importance of the Sea Route

The Bab al-Mandab Strait lies on the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe, which runs via the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Suez Canal. It is therefore one of the world's most important trade routes, handling a significant share of global container and oil trade.

The Houthi militia in Yemen had repeatedly attacked ships in the Red Sea in the past, citing the conflict in the Gaza Strip and Western states' support for Israel as justification. Since the beginning of 2024, attacks on shipping in the region had increased significantly, prompting several shipping companies to reroute their vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.

Background to the Houthi Attacks

The attacks led to an increased military presence of international naval forces in the Red Sea. A US-led coalition, joined by several Western states, has since been attempting to protect merchant ships from the attacks. Nevertheless, incidents continued to occur.

The region around the port city of Hodeidah on Yemen's west coast has long been considered a focal point of the conflict. Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government forces it supports have been waging a military offensive there against the Houthis for years; the Houthis control large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa.

International Reactions

The UKMTO called on ship crews in the region to exercise heightened vigilance and recommended reporting any suspicious observations immediately. The authority maintains a round-the-clock reporting center for civilian shipping and coordinates with the naval forces of the international coalition.

International shipping companies and insurers have been watching the situation in the Red Sea with concern for months. Previous attacks on ships had already led to a significant increase in war risk premiums and delays in goods deliveries. Some ships had to be brought into Yemeni ports after attacks.

The Houthi attacks have also triggered diplomatic reactions. Several Western states, including the United States and Great Britain, imposed sanctions on Houthi officials and called for an end to the attacks on civilian shipping. At the same time, negotiations over a possible ceasefire in Yemen are underway, although these have recently stalled.

The exact number of injured persons on the damaged cargo ship was initially unclear. Rescue services and nearby merchant vessels were requested to provide assistance following the strike. The UKMTO announced a further update as soon as new information became available.

The incident underscores the ongoing danger to international shipping in one of the world's busiest waterways. Economic experts warn that a prolonged disruption of the Red Sea route would have significant impacts on global supply chains and energy prices.
