South Korea's former President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced on Friday by the Seoul District Court to 30 years in prison. As a court spokesperson told the AFP news agency, Yoon was "given 30 years in jail" for the drone overflights of North Korea. This adds another lengthy prison term to the life sentence already imposed in February.
According to the prosecution, the drone overflights heightened tensions with North Korea. Prosecutors had accused Yoon of using the drone flights to create a pretext for his declaration of martial law at the end of 2024. Additionally, as prosecutors further detailed, Pyongyang gained access to secret information about South Korea's military equipment after some of the aircraft crashed.
