Argentina and Messi: An Era Bids Farewell

For Argentina, the tournament ended in disappointment. Lionel Messi, 39 years old, cried after the match and left the stadium in New Jersey without saying a word to the public. Coach Lionel Scaloni broke off his press conference in tears. Messi had scored eight goals and provided four assists, but remained largely invisible in the final. With Pau Cubarsí, a 19-year-old defender received the prize for best young player – not the initially favored Yamal, who finished the tournament with only one goal.

After the final whistle, there was a scene on the pitch that stood symbolically above the sporting result. Lamine Yamal, who 19 years ago as an infant had been bathed by a young Messi for a charity calendar, embraced his Argentine idol for minutes after the final whistle. The picture went around the world.

Already on Sunday, the Empire State Building in New York had been illuminated in the Spanish national colors yellow and red to point to the upcoming final appearance. The 381-meter-high landmark of the city was thus part of a wave of attention that accompanied the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Symbolic Scenes Around the Final

During the trophy presentation, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump appeared together. Trump, 80 years old, handed the trophy to the Spaniards. After a few seconds, Infantino accompanied him off the stage.

Celebrations in Spain

In Spain, celebrations broke out immediately after the final whistle. Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities across the country deep into the night. Dani Olmo reported on the celebrations: „Wir haben gefeiert, viele Fotos gemacht und viele Erinnerungen gesammelt. Wir haben kleine Trophäen bekommen, die wirklich cool waren. Wir haben einfach gefeiert – so, wie es ein Weltmeister macht“.

Marc Cucurella, who had won the Club World Cup with the London club Chelsea a year ago at the NFL stadium of the New York Giants and New York Jets, announced that the celebration would be made up for back home: „Wir freuen uns wirklich sehr, nach Spanien zu kommen. Viele Leute konnten hier nicht dabei sein, und wir wollen mit allen feiern“. On the team's performance, he said: „Ich finde, wir haben herausragend Fußball gespielt und diesen Pokal verdient“.

Spain's Track Record of Success in Recent Years

Spain's sporting rise is the result of long-term federation work. In the past five years, Spanish national teams have won 17 titles. The U20 and U17 women became world champions in 2022, the women's senior national team secured the World Cup title in 2023. The U19 men won the European Championship in 2024 and 2026, and the U19 women the European title five times in a row.

With the title in the USA, Mexico and Canada, Spain is the first nation to be simultaneously world champion in both the men's and women's game. In addition, the country is unbeaten in 38 competitive matches. Austrian coach Ralf Rangnick had described the team as a „fehlerfreies Uhrwerk“ after his team's elimination.

Spain had opened the tournament with a 0:0 against Cape Verde and went on to defeat, among others, Belgium in the quarterfinals 2:1. The only goal conceded in the tournament was ironically conceded in that match. Afterwards, the defense with Cucurella, Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte and goalkeeper Unai Simón was in top form.

Comparison with the Golden Generation

The comparison with the golden generation around Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets, who between 2008 and 2012 had won two European Championships and one World Cup title in the style of tiki-taka, is obvious. Ferran Torres is already being compared to Andrés Iniesta, whose goal in the 2010 final against the Netherlands had given Spain its first World Cup title.

Spain had won the 2010 final in South Africa with only two goals conceded. In 2024, the selection had also won the European Championship. Now follows the second World Cup title after 16 years. Unai Simón already looked ahead: „Wir mussten 16 Jahre auf diesen Moment warten. Ich hoffe, dass wir diesmal nur vier Jahre auf den nächsten Stern warten müssen“.

Outlook on 2030

Argentina remains one of the defining teams of world football with the 2022 World Cup title and the Copa América win, in which Messi played a central role. The next World Cup in 2030 will be held at least partially in Spain – Messi would then be 43 years old, should he participate in another final tournament once more.

For the players, it is now off to well-deserved vacation before the national and international club season begins again. Cucurella is facing a move from Chelsea to Real Madrid. Ferran Torres, 26, had played the tournament through to the end in sporting fashion despite personal turbulence – according to media reports, he separated from his partner Martina Hunter shortly before the quarterfinal against Belgium.
