Madrid, 25 May 2026

Spain's national football coach Luis de la Fuente announced a 26-man World Cup squad in Madrid on Monday that, for the first time since 1950, does not contain a single Real Madrid player.

A historic absence

The last time a Spanish World Cup squad featured no Real Madrid representation was in 1950, when the tournament was held in Brazil. Since then, the club has been a key supplier of players for the national team.

The squad of 26 players was unveiled at a press conference in the Spanish capital. De la Fuente explained that injuries and current form played a role in selection, though he refused to be drawn into controversy. "Wir sind sehr entspannt," he told reporters.
