Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the site of a Spanish high-speed train crash and pledged decisive action, as Renfe suspended ticket sales on the Madrid-Andalusia corridor through December.

Sánchez spoke from the crash site and described the collision as unacceptable for a country with two high-speed rail accidents in the same year. He said Spain must not experience such a tragedy again.

The prime minister made clear that the scope of any official response would depend on the findings of the investigation. “If the collision is shown to have resulted from failures in the system,” he vowed to “act decisively,” according to his remarks at the scene.

The crash has had an immediate effect on one of Spain's busiest transport links. State railway company Renfe suspended ticket sales on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed corridor on Wednesday evening, and the suspension is scheduled to last through December.
