The SPD in Baden-Württemberg aims to form a new dual leadership with Mannheim Bundestag member Isabel Cademartori (38) and former Bundestag member Robin Mesarosch (35) from Sigmaringen, and to lead the party out of its historic low.
Election Defeat as Starting Point
In the state election in March, the SPD reached a new low with just 5.5 percent of the vote. It was the worst election result the Social Democrats have ever achieved in the state. Lead candidate Andreas Stoch announced his withdrawal as party and faction chief on election night itself. The faction leadership was taken over one day after the election by Sascha Binder, who as general secretary had been responsible for the Social Democrats' election campaign.
