A new opinion poll in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern shows the Social Democrats (SPD) cutting the ruling Alternative for Germany's (AfD) lead, while the Christian Democrats (CDU) continue to lose support ahead of the state election.

The latest survey, published on 3 September 2026, puts the AfD and the SPD narrowly separated at the top of voter intention in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to figures cited by regional broadcaster NDR, the gap between the two parties has shrunk compared with earlier polls this year, while the CDU registers another drop in support.

For the SPD, the numbers offer encouragement as the party tries to position itself as the dominant force of political moderation in the north-east state. SPD figures have argued in recent weeks that being the strongest party is not a prerequisite for forming the next government, and that what counts is the coalition arithmetic after the vote.
