In the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the AfD is narrowly ahead of the SPD, while Minister-President Manuela Schwesig won the direct mandate in Schwerin against the AfD's top candidate, Leif-Erik Holm.
The count of votes in the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern produced a neck-and-neck race at the top: according to the preliminary final result, the AfD held a slight lead over the SPD. This points to a constellation that is likely to make forming a government in northeastern Germany complicated.
The Duel in Schwerin
In the Schwerin constituency, the two political rivals faced each other personally: Leif-Erik Holm, the AfD's minister-presidential candidate, lost the contest for the direct mandate in Schwerin to Minister-President Schwesig. Schwesig was thus able to defend her home constituency directly, while Holm is reliant on entering parliament via the state list.
