Saarbrücken, 15 June 2026
The national summer games of Special Olympics kicked off on Monday evening with an opening ceremony at the sold-out Ludwigsparkstadion in Saarbrücken, where around 4,300 athletes in 27 sports will participate through Saturday.
According to the organizers, the games are the largest inclusive multi-sport event in Germany and at the same time the biggest sporting event in the history of Saarland. Around 100,000 visitors are expected. The majority of competitions will take place in Saarbrücken, with additional venues spread across the entire Saarland.
New to the program in Saarland are the sports of 3x3 basketball, artistic gymnastics, hockey, rowing, and sailing. For the first time, the national games are being held across borders: the swimming competitions will take place in the French city of Forbach. There has never before been a national edition of Special Olympics in southwestern Germany; the last one was held in 2022 in Berlin.
