The Federal President also used the appearance to appeal to political actors not to further escalate the tone in the migration debate during the 2026 election year. Factual criticism of individual regulations was legitimate, but blanket scaremongering against immigration was not. He warned that such tones could undermine trust in the rule of law and democratic institutions.

Representatives of business associations welcomed Steinmeier's remarks. They pointed out that without additional workers from abroad, numerous positions in trades, care, and industry could not be filled in the long term. Municipalities, which carry out integration work on the ground, also signaled agreement.

Criticism came from opposition politicians, who accused Steinmeier of ignoring the concerns of many citizens. They called for a stronger focus on border controls and more consistent return of persons obligated to leave the country. The federal government must clearly distinguish between humanitarian reception and irregular migration, they said.

Without immigration, the number of people in employment will fall and the burden on social security systems will rise. Politics would therefore be well advised to create the framework conditions now for orderly and fair immigration.

Steinmeier concluded with the note that a diverse society was not a given, but had to be lived and defended every day. Those who see diversity as a weakness misjudge Germany's historical experience. The coming years would show whether society could preserve cohesion.
