Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier used the opening of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference to warn of a "zeitgeist of brutality and ruthlessness" in international politics and to call for a strengthening of the rules-based world order.
Warning of growing confrontation
At the opening of the third Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) on Monday, Steinmeier painted a bleak picture of the global political situation. "A zeitgeist of brutality and ruthlessness is blowing through international politics," he said. Raw power-seeking, zero-sum thinking and confrontation were increasingly displacing the pillars of a cooperative and rules-based order. In this context, Steinmeier spoke of a "new world disorder" that could only be countered through greater international cooperation and mutual trust.
