On the tenth anniversary of the right-wing terrorist attack at the Olympia shopping center in Munich, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for greater commitment against racism at a memorial event.
Background of the crime
The occasion was the anniversary of the attack on July 22, 2016, in which an 18-year-old at the time had shot and killed eight young people and one adult from racist motives. The perpetrator later took his own life. Among the victims were people of Albanian descent as well as members of the Sinti and Roma. The act is classified as a right-wing terrorist attack.
At the afternoon memorial event in the Bavarian state capital, alongside Steinmeier, Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner and Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter also spoke. According to the organizers, relatives of the nine people killed, survivors, and Munich citizens wanted to commemorate the victims together.
