Ankara, 08 August 2026

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker (ÖVP) travelled to Ankara on Sunday for a long-planned working visit with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with economic relations and migration policy on the agenda.

The trip comes three days after a controversial remark by Stocker about childcare that drew political criticism at home. Despite the domestic fallout, the chancellor proceeded with the previously scheduled visit to Turkey, underlining that the Ankara talks had been arranged well in advance.

According to the reporting, the working visit is intended to deepen bilateral relations between Austria and Turkey. Discussions are expected to cover trade, investment and economic cooperation, areas in which both governments have signalled renewed interest in recent months.
