A study published in "Science Advances" shows that so-called century floods in the Alpine region will occur significantly more frequently in the future due to more intense heavy precipitation, and authorities will have to regularly revise their hazard maps upward.

The investigation is based on hourly measurement series from 384 rivers in Switzerland and Austria. Hydrologist Paul Astagneau of the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF used these to simulate discharge until the end of the century. The results contradict previous projections, which assumed stable or even decreasing flooding in the mountains.

These older models relied on daily averages. As the researchers found, this inadequately captures short, intense precipitation. "We did not expect such large differences compared to the daily data," said Astagneau. "Extreme events are changing more than moderate floods."
