Scientists from the organization World Weather Attribution have calculated that the current heatwave in Europe could practically not have occurred at this time of year in a climate without man-made climate change.
The high temperatures currently gripping large parts of Europe are directly attributable to human-caused climate change, according to a new rapid analysis. The team led by climate scientist Friederike Otto stated on Thursday that both the daytime highs and the nighttime temperatures would have been "practically impossible" in a climate like that of 50 years ago at this time of year, and would also have been extremely unlikely in other seasons. According to the researchers, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and Great Britain are particularly affected.
