In an estimated 167 million old mobile phones lying unused in drawers in Germany, approximately one ton of gold is slumbering, according to a short study by the German Raw Materials Agency within the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

The German Raw Materials Agency examined the metal content of old mobile phones in German households in a short study. The result: In the around 167 million old mobile phones estimated to be stored unused in German drawers, some 3,700 tons of aluminum and 1,800 tons of copper are contained – and above all about one ton of the precious metal gold, as the study presented in Hanover notes. Verbatim: „Gut eine Tonne des Edelmetalls sei in den schätzungsweise 167 Millionen Althandys enthalten, die in Deutschland ungenutzt in Schubladen liegen."
