The Styrian SPÖ chairman Max Lercher admitted mistakes by his party following the historic decline of the Social Democrats in Graz and simultaneously defended the federal government's economic policy decisions against criticism.
The Graz Collapse in Numbers
During his appearance on ZiB 2, the state party chief was confronted with a less-than-flattering graphic. It shows how the SPÖ in the Styrian capital crashed from 42.5 percent in 1988 to just 5.6 percent most recently. Lercher described the trajectory literally as „ein Scheitern der Sozialdemokratie, durch viele Fehler bedingt" and spoke of a „de facto" collapse.
With regard to the success of the Graz KPÖ and its mayor Elke Kahr, Lercher said the Communists had „gut auf die Leute zugegangen". At the same time, he drew a clear substantive line: „Ich möchte nicht die KPÖ werden. Ich will wieder eine akzentuierte Sozialdemokratie haben, die weiß, wo sie steht." He rejected any rapprochement with the Communist Party with the words: „Die Kommunistische Partei ist die Kommunistische Partei und die Sozialdemokratie die Sozialdemokratie."
