Chamber of Labour President Peter Eder was elected on Saturday as the new state chairman of the Salzburg SPÖ with 95.3 percent at the party's 44th state convention in St. Johann im Pongau.

Nearly 700 delegates and guests came to the congress hall of the Pongau district capital to officially elect the previous interim party leader to the top of the state party. Eder's predecessor David Egger-Kranzinger had resigned at the end of 2024; since then, Eder had led the party on an interim basis together with the state parliament members Barbara Thöny and Bettina Brandauer. Back in May, Eder had already prevailed as a candidate with 96 percent of the votes in a membership survey. He had publicly announced his candidacy in the autumn with a ride on the Salzburg local railway.
