Graz, June 29, 2026

Doris Kampus resigned on Monday evening with immediate effect as leader of the SPÖ Graz, after the Social Democrats reached a new historic low of 5.6 percent in the municipal election on June 26, 2026, and lost their club status.

Election landslide hits SPÖ Graz

The SPÖ Graz is experiencing a political landslide following the municipal election. According to the absentee ballots counted on Monday, the party received only 5.6 percent of the vote, a loss of 3.9 percentage points compared to 2021. It thereby lost half of its mandates and dropped from four to two seats in the new municipal council. Because it is now missing a third mandate required for club status, the SPÖ in Graz is also losing its formal faction status.
