Zermatt, 04 August 2026

The Zermatt ski area has suspended its summer operations, while individual Swiss-Ski teams will still be able to complete training sessions on site in the coming days.

Background: Pressure on the Theodul Glacier

The management of Zermatt Bergbahnen has decided to temporarily suspend summer operations at the glacier ski area. The background is that conditions on the Theodul Glacier have become increasingly difficult in recent times, making a full regular summer operation no longer feasible. The decision affects the offering for tourists as well as training operations.

According to sources close to Zermatt Bergbahnen, the situation on the glacier remains tense. Weather and snow conditions had reportedly changed increasingly, so that a continuous summer operation could no longer be justified. The neighbouring resort of Saas-Fee is also an important point of reference in the region for glacier skiing and summer training.
