A sealed NES copy of "Super Mario Bros." from an early production run dating to early 1986 has been auctioned for $3 million at Heritage Auctions in the USA, significantly surpassing the previous record for a single video game.
A Cartridge from 1986
Heritage Auctions in the USA awarded the winning bid for a sealed copy of "Super Mario Bros." over the past weekend. Neither the buyer nor the seller were named by the auction house. The price of $3 million surpasses the previous record of $2 million from 2021, when another sealed "Super Mario Bros." set the benchmark. The $870,000 "The Legend of Zelda" sold the same year was also far outshone.
According to the auction house, the piece sold is a particularly rare variant from an early second production series in early 1986. Instead of the plastic shrink wrap that became standard later, a glossy sticker seals the package. According to Heritage, only three sealed copies of this variant are known to exist worldwide. The cartridge now sold, graded PSA 9.6 A++, is the best-preserved of the three. The grade 9.6 stands for "Near Mint," meaning an almost perfect condition.
