Super Typhoon Champi intensified over the Pacific on Thursday and is moving from the southeast toward Taiwan, where further flight cancellations are expected.
The storm system Champi churned over the Pacific on Thursday and reached the highest typhoon category, according to meteorologists. Peak gusts were measured at 220 kilometers per hour. That makes Champi one of the so-called super typhoons, a category that stands for extreme wind speeds and severe destruction on land.
The storm's track is bringing it from the southeast toward Taiwan. The first airlines prepared for disruptions. The Hong Kong-based low-cost carrier HK Express announced that further flight cancellations were to be expected in the coming days. In the southern Taiwanese port city of Kaohsiung, authorities were also bracing for the arrival of the severe weather.
