Suspected hotel thief arrested in Salzburg's Andräviertel

Following her arrest, the Hungarian citizen was remanded to Salzburg Correctional Facility (Justizanstalt Salzburg). The Salzburg Public Prosecutor's Office is now conducting the investigation on suspicion of aggravated theft.

Police recommendations for hotel guests

The police stress that hotel guests should never leave valuables openly in their rooms, even if the hotel provides a safe. Cash and personal documents are best kept in the hotel safe or in another secure location. Guests are also advised to always carefully lock their door when leaving the room and to report any suspicious observations immediately.

The case has attracted attention in Salzburg also because the incident took place in a central-city hotel in the Andräviertel – a district that is generally considered safe and is popular with both tourists and business travelers. Investigators currently assume that it was an isolated incident.

Possible further offenses in focus

According to their own statements, officers are also examining whether the alleged perpetrator could be responsible for similar incidents in other hotels or accommodation establishments. Tip-offs from the public and from other hotel operators are being received, the Salzburg police said.

According to the officers, the hotel guest who noticed and reported the offense was cooperative. Thanks to him, the alleged thief was able to be apprehended quickly. The police expressly thanked him for his prudent tip-off.

Whereabouts of stolen money unclear

The stolen cash amounting to 800 euros was, according to the investigators, not initially recovered from the arrested woman. However, criminal investigators are following up on leads regarding the whereabouts of the money. Whether parts of the sum have already been used elsewhere is the subject of ongoing investigations.

The Salzburg police announced that they would conduct a final review of the incident and analyze the case in detail. If the suspicion is confirmed, the 41-year-old faces a substantial prison sentence under Austrian criminal law. The investigation is ongoing.
