Unknown individuals have damaged cables on a railway line near the town of Backnang in Baden-Württemberg; police are investigating on suspicion of sabotage.

The incident occurred in the Maubach area, a district of Backnang northeast of Stuttgart. According to police, the damage caused disruptions to rail traffic as well as to internet and telephone connections in the town of around 38,000 inhabitants.

The cables, which are needed for data transmission along the railway line, were deliberately cut, according to investigators. The consequences were immediately felt: travelers experienced delays, and numerous households and businesses were temporarily left without internet and telephone connections.
