Belgium has issued visas to a five-member delegation of the radical Islamist Taliban for one-day talks with the European Commission in Brussels, which are to focus on the return of rejected asylum seekers to Afghanistan.
Background: Visas for a Controversial Delegation
As confirmed by a spokesperson for the Belgian Foreign Ministry, the visas were granted on Monday following a security review. According to the spokesperson, they are valid for only one day and only for Belgium, not for the Schengen Area. Diplomatic circles and media reports assumed that the talks could take place on Tuesday.
The delegation is led by Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the 37-year-old spokesperson of the Afghan Foreign Ministry. Balkhi was appointed foreign ministry spokesperson shortly after the Taliban's takeover in August 2021 and speaks fluent English. He presents himself as a representative of Afghanistan and said verbatim: „Wir sind das Islamische Emirat. Wir regieren dieses Land. Wir dienen unserem Volk und arbeiten mit anderen Ländern zusammen, auch dem Westen.“ ("We are the Islamic Emirate. We govern this country. We serve our people and work with other countries, including the West.")
