Regarding implementation, the minister underscored that the burden must not remain solely with the Austrian Armed Forces. She pointed to the need to more strongly involve civil society structures, authorities, and, where appropriate, the economy, in order to handle recruitment, training, and reservist support.

To finance the reform, Tanner announced she would request additional funds from the budget. She made clear that without sufficient budgets, neither equipment nor personnel could be expanded. She did not name concrete figures, but pointed to ongoing talks with the Ministry of Finance.

Funding and Distribution of Burdens

The debate over military service has been a persistent political issue in Austria for months. While the SPÖ has traditionally advocated for maintaining basic military service, the Neos have repeatedly called for greater professionalization and voluntariness. The ÖVP, as Tanner's sister party, emphasizes Austria's security in the geopolitical environment.
