Istanbul, July 15, 2026
To mark the tenth anniversary of the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, the Turkish government under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is planning celebrations across the country under the motto "Unser Wille – unser Sieg".
The Night of the Coup Attempt
On the evening of July 15, 2016, parts of the military launched a coup against the government led by Erdoğan. In Istanbul and the capital Ankara, fighting broke out between the coup plotters and security forces loyal to the government. The plotters also fired on civilians with tanks and fighter jets after Erdoğan's call for people to take to the streets, with many citizens stepping in front of the troops. The parliament building in Ankara was also shelled. That night left more than 250 people dead and more than 2,000 injured.
