The American health official Anthony Fauci refused to answer questions during a heated Senate hearing on the origins of Covid-19, prompting Senator Rand Paul to threaten to place him in contempt of Congress.
The hearing, organized by the relevant Senate committee, reopened one of Washington's most divisive political disputes: whether the Covid-19 pandemic began through natural animal-to-human transmission or through a laboratory-related incident in Wuhan, China, and whether U.S. officials properly oversaw the research conducted there with American funds.
According to several sources who reported on the hearing, Republican Senator Rand Paul pressed Fauci on the funding of research in Wuhan, demanding precise explanations and supporting documents. Faced with the health official's repeated refusal to answer, Paul brandished the threat of a contempt of Congress proceeding, a mechanism allowing Congress to sanction a witness who obstructs its work.
