A US Senate committee under Republican leadership voted on Thursday morning (local time) to recommend criminal prosecution of former immunologist Anthony Fauci.

Background: Fauci and the COVID-19 reckoning

The resolution, which passed with the majority of Republicans, provides for requesting that the Department of Justice open an investigation into Anthony Fauci. Democratic members of the committee voted unanimously against it. Fauci himself had denied any false statements in earlier hearings.

The committee's Republican chairman, Rand Paul, however argues that this article does not apply to Fauci. He points, among other things, to protection through a pardon that former US President Joe Biden had proactively arranged shortly before leaving the White House.
