Tesla has put driverless, steering-wheel-less Cybercab robotaxis onto public streets in Austin, Texas; Tesla's AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said the ride is open to the entire public.

Tesla on Thursday began deploying its new steering-wheel-less Cybercabs in real-world traffic in the Texas capital of Austin. Previously, the company had tested the vehicles largely in controlled environments and only on a limited basis. With this step, Tesla is moving from a pilot operation to a public trial in which passengers are to be transported without a safety driver at the wheel.

Tesla's AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said anyone can ride along: "It is open to the entire public." This significantly broadens the circle of users. Until now, according to the company, access to Tesla's robotaxis had been limited to a restricted group of people. Now, anyone who requests a vehicle in Austin should be able to sit in one of the autonomously driving Cybercabs.
