Thierno Ballo leaves WAC and moves to AS Saint-Étienne

Statistics of a defining WAC era

The Austrian-born player had most recently been loaned out to English second-division side Millwall in order to gain match practice at a high level. His contract in the Lavanttal originally ran until 2027, which is why Saint-Étienne must pay a corresponding transfer fee for his early release. The reported sum of around three million euros would be a clearly visible signal to the European transfer market.

The final departure from Carinthia comes as no surprise. Ballo had already moved to the Lavanttal in the summer of 2022 and had quickly developed into a key performer. With WAC, he celebrated winning the Austrian Cup in the 2024/25 season, one of the greatest achievements in the club's history. This triumph gave the transfer additional weight.

National team debut as a career springboard

In June 2025, on the back of the cup triumph, Ballo had also made his debut for the ÖFB national team. In the 4:0 away win in World Cup qualifying against San Marino, he made his first appearance for Austria. This step onto the international stage made him even more attractive to clubs abroad, as market value generally rises through international appearances.

At WAC, the response to his departure was a grateful but also wistful statement. Those responsible explicitly thanked the departing player for his services in the Wolves' shirt and wished him all the best for his next task. Ballo himself had previously also spoken positively about his time in Wolfsberg.

A new challenge in France

With the move to Ligue 2, Ballo is now turning a new chapter in his career. Saint-Étienne, a club with a great tradition and a multiple former French champion, is apparently looking to strengthen the squad specifically in order to push for promotion back to Ligue 1. For Ballo, this means a new sporting challenge in unfamiliar surroundings.

The transfer is part of a series of departures that WAC has to absorb this summer. With Augustine Boakye, another attacking player leaves the pack, which places additional tasks in front of coach Dietmar Kühbauer's squad planning. WAC will have to reinvest the proceeds from the Ballo deal in order to fill the gap that has opened up in attack.

Open tasks for WAC

Sportingly, Ballo leaves behind a gap at WAC that will be hard to fill. His pace, his dribbling and his eye for the killer pass shaped Wolfsberg's attacking play over three seasons. It will now be one of the club's central tasks to find a player who can perform this role with comparable quality.

For Ballo himself, the move to France also represents the chance to prove himself in a new country. After stints in the Austrian Bundesliga and a loan spell in England, the next step is into Western European football. Should he be able to pick up where he left off there, a return to the focus of the ÖFB selection would not be out of the question either.
