Shortage of Air Defense Ammunition

The Russian army is increasingly relying on a combination of drones, glide bombs, and ballistic missiles in its attacks. While drones are comparatively cheap and produced in large numbers, ballistic missiles and glide bombs are difficult to stop due to their speed and weight. The ammunition shortfall on the Ukrainian side compounds this problem.

The background to the situation is the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Since then, Western allies, including the United States, have supplied Ukraine with air defense systems and ammunition. Delivery commitments have repeatedly been implemented only sluggishly or scaled back, worsening the situation at the front and in the cities.

Arms Deliveries and Western Support

Some of the drones used by Russia are said to be of Iranian production, underscoring the geopolitical dimension of the conflict. The Ukrainian government has been calling for months for additional Patriot systems and interceptor munitions in order to be able to intercept ballistic missiles in particular. Deliveries have so far been insufficient to meet the need.

Residents of Brovary reported loud explosions and power outages in parts of the suburb on social media. Such reports cannot be independently verified at this time. Authorities called on the population to seek shelter and follow the instructions of emergency services.

Situation in Brovary and Response of the Authorities

The Ukrainian Air Force stated in the morning that it had intercepted several drones and missiles during the previous night. Exact figures on shootdowns and remaining impacts were not initially released. Damage to residential buildings and infrastructure is to be assessed during the course of the day.

International observers assess the attacks as part of a deliberate campaign against the capital region. Recently, attacks on civilian targets in Kyiv and surrounding areas have increased while fighting continues at the front in the east and south of Ukraine. A diplomatic solution to the conflict is currently not in sight.
