Salzburg, July 14, 2026
A thunderstorm front kept numerous fire brigades busy in the state of Salzburg and the adjacent Salzkammergut around midday on Tuesday, blocking roads, shutting down five tunnels on the Tauern Autobahn, and leading rescue teams on Lake Wolfgang to the aid of swimmers.
According to the state warning center, 165 male firefighters and 20 female firefighters deployed between 12:30 and 14:45 to handle operations in the Flachgau, Pongau, Pinzgau, and Lungau districts. A total of around 150 firefighters were in operation simultaneously, police reported to APA. The thunderstorms had already formed in the morning in the Tyrolean Unterland and then caused initial damage in Salzburg.
Fire brigades and water rescue services were also deployed in the Upper Austrian lake district. Swimmers were rescued at Lake Wolfgang and boats were brought to shore. In addition, boats had to be recovered in Weyregg and in Seewalchen am Attersee.
