On Friday evening, a severe thunderstorm at Vienna Airport triggered a so-called shutdown, during which passengers on a Zadar flight had to remain on board for around 20 to 30 minutes after landing.

IATA Safety Rule

Between approximately 5 and 6 p.m., a so-called "Shutdown" had to be declared at Vienna Airport. A severe thunderstorm caused a safety stop at Vienna Airport, according to reports. The measure affected all flight operations on the apron.

The background to the stop is a safety rule of the international aviation organization IATA: As soon as a thunderstorm cell is located within a radius of five kilometers around the airport, all operations on the handling areas are stopped. "Da sich weder Mitarbeiter noch Passagiere dort aufhalten dürfen, verzögert sich die gesamte Flugzeugabfertigung", it was stated. Aircraft handling is also temporarily halted, baggage is not unloaded, and no passengers are allowed to disembark. "Es darf kein Gepäck entladen und keine Maschine abgefertigt werden", the broadcaster reported further.
