Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has backed an initiative by North Rhine-Westphalia and Hamburg to introduce an additional, cheaper Deutschlandticket for occasional riders.

Background: The Deutschlandticket

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has shown himself fundamentally open to the proposal to introduce an additional fare model alongside the 49-euro ticket, aimed specifically at people who only use buses and trains occasionally. Schnieder described the idea as a sensible approach to winning new user groups for local public transport.

The motion by NRW and Hamburg for the Transport Ministers' Conference in Hohenschwangau, Bavaria, provides for setting up a working group to develop a concept for the new ticket system. The state ministers confer there on common lines in transport policy. A final decision on the additional ticket is not yet linked to the commissioning of the working group.
