Time Trial at the Tour de France: Evenepoel wins, Lipowitz withdraws injured

Denk also emphasized that Lipowitz had spoken with him personally and was doing as well as could be expected given the circumstances: "Es geht ihm gut, ich habe schon persönlich mit ihm sprechen können." The team boss also expressed the hope that Lipowitz would return to the bike this season: "Ich gehe davon aus, dass man ihn in diesem Jahr noch auf dem Rad und bei Rennen sehen wird."

Denk made clear, however, that in his assessment Lipowitz had simply entered the curve too fast and that no one else could be blamed. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the course safety may not have been optimal: "Ob er diese Verletzungen davongetragen hätte, wenn die Strecke besser abgesichert wäre, das kann man diskutieren." Denk also pointed out that the teams had had very little training time on the 26.1-kilometer course.

Assessment from Simon Geschke

Former Tour stage winner Simon Geschke put the crash in context in an SWR interview. He explained that a time trial is a battle for seconds, in which ten seconds can decide between the podium or disappointment. "Die Fahrer jagen mit Puls 180 bis 190 am Limit, steuern Kurven mit 60 bis 70 km/h an," said Geschke.

Regarding Lipowitz's specific crash, Geschke said: "Ich habe mir den Sturz ein paar Mal angeschaut. Ich finde nicht, dass er wahnsinnig zu schnell in die Kurve gefahren ist. Ich denke einfach, dass er die Linie nicht optimal getroffen hat und dann mit dem Vorderrad leider weggerutscht ist." Lipowitz lost the front wheel, struck the curb at high speed, and was hurled into the barriers, being escorted off the course bleeding.

Geschke spoke of a "ganz bitteren Pille" for Lipowitz: "Jetzt, wo gerade die dritte Woche begonnen hat, die ihm ja eigentlich entgegenkommt – das ist ja, wofür er das ganze Jahr trainiert hat –, gleich am ersten Tag dieser dritten Woche auszuscheiden, ist eine ganz bittere Pille." The collarbone, however, is the "dankbarste Verletzung" a professional can have, because it heals well: "Ein Schlüsselbeinbruch ist – so makaber das klingt – eigentlich die dankbarste Verletzung, die man haben kann, weil sie sehr gut heilt und man relativ schnell wieder auf der Rolle fahren kann."

Geschke, who has lived in Freiburg since 2012 and won a Tour stage in 2015, expressed confidence that Lipowitz would return stronger: "Florian ist noch jung. Ich glaube, das macht ihn nur noch hungriger fürs nächste Jahr. Er kommt sicherlich stärker zurück – vielleicht sogar noch dieses Jahr."

Outlook for the Rest of the Season

For Lipowitz, however, the season with its major goals is likely to be largely over. The Vuelta a España is scheduled from August 22 to September 13, and the World Championships in Montreal from September 20 to 27. The German rider will in all likelihood miss both races, as things stand, though a comeback at the Giro di Lombardia on October 10 may be possible.

Denk also acknowledged: "Für die letzten Höhepunkte in dieser Saison wird es kaum reichen." The team, however, is well set up with the dual captaincy of Evenepoel and Lipowitz as well as the two stage wins already secured: "Wir rennen jetzt keinem Erfolg mehr hinterher." Lipowitz had ridden strongly as a newcomer last year, but this time started with "einer riesigen Erwartungshaltung von ganz Radsport-Deutschland" – "Das ist der Unterschied."

Nighttime Controls and Credibility

In addition to Lipowitz, fellow favorite Jonas Vingegaard was also caught out by a crash in the time trial. Geschke did not interpret the recent spate of crashes as a consequence of nighttime doping controls, but rather as coincidence: "Ich halte die Stürze für Zufall." These controls, however, remain important for the credibility of the sport despite the nighttime burden on riders: "Es ist sicherlich supernervig, in der Nacht eine Dopingkontrolle zu haben. Aber es ist für die Glaubwürdigkeit des Sports sehr wichtig, da gibt es keine Diskussion."

Geschke also explained: "Es gibt nun mal Mittel, die nur sehr kurz im System sind und die man morgens schon nicht mehr nachweisen kann. Von daher sind solche nächtlichen Kontrollen eine Abschreckung für Fahrer, die vielleicht dieses Zeitfenster nutzen wollen." The fact that Lipowitz had been on course for third place on the stage right before his crash makes the outcome particularly painful for the team.

Evenepoel Strengthens His Podium Push

While Stage 17 in the Alps awaits, the focus of German cycling also looks forward. Denk sees his protégé on a good path despite the setback: "Letztes Jahr kam er als Newcomer hierher und hat performt. Dieses Jahr ist er mit einer riesigen Erwartungshaltung von ganz Radsport-Deutschland gestartet. Das ist der Unterschied." At 25, Lipowitz still has plenty of time to match last year's performances.

Stage winner Evenepoel himself was able to celebrate another major success. His victory in the time trial underscores that the team, despite the serious loss of his co-captain, is excellently positioned in the general classification. The upcoming mountain stages will show whether the Belgian can actually hold on to his podium place in Paris.
