Heidenau: Devastation Caused by Hail
According to police, hailstones up to the size of tennis balls punched holes in house roofs in Heidenau, Lower Saxony. Cars were also badly damaged in some cases. One resident told a dpa reporter: „Es hat alles kaputt gemacht." Her roommate is now left without a car, as the brand-new vehicle is „Schrott".
The woman, who says she has lived in Heidenau for 18 years, was visibly shocked: „Ich wohne jetzt 18 Jahre in Heidenau, ich habe so was noch nie erlebt, so ein Chaos." Water is seeping into the apartments through the damaged roofs: „Es ist nichts mehr heile, es regnet durch durchs Dach, in die Wohnungen rein."
Operations in Hannover and Ludwigslust-Parchim
In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, tennis ball-sized hailstones also came down. They accumulated on the ground and had to be cleared away with wheel loaders. After heavy rainfall, firefighters pumped out flooded basements and removed toppled trees.
