# Severe Storm in Lower Saxony: Tennis Ball-Sized Hail Damages Roofs and Cars

In the Hannover region and later in the city of Hannover itself, torrential rain also flooded numerous basements, underground garages, and elevator shafts. According to a spokesperson, the Hannover fire department was deployed nonstop with around 300 emergency personnel and was still working through operations on Tuesday morning.

According to police, around 250 emergency calls related to the storm were received in the state on Monday evening alone between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. overnight. The fire department responded well over 600 times, as reported in the morning.

DWD Warns of Further Thunderstorms

The German Weather Service (DWD) expects that the series of severe weather is not yet over. Particularly in southern Lower Saxony, thunderstorms could occur again in the afternoon and evening, with heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter possible in some areas.

According to the DWD, Wednesday will remain predominantly sunny and dry with highs of up to 32 degrees, with showers and thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. Today, following cooler temperatures in the morning, daytime highs of between 27 and 30 degrees are expected inland and around 22 degrees on the coast.

Heat Warning: Caution in Indoor Spaces

In contrast to the extreme weather at the end of June with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees and tropical nights, it will cool down significantly overnight in the coming days. For the night leading into Tuesday, the DWD forecasts temperatures of 17 to 14 degrees inland, and from Tuesday to Wednesday, only 16 to 13 degrees are expected.

Against the backdrop of summer heat, weather expert Martin Gudd also warned of health risks indoors. „Die Menschen müssen viel mehr trinken als normal", he said. Especially for older people, the combination of warmth and humidity is „potenziell tödlich". He strongly advised against closing windows and hanging up wet towels, as this causes moisture to accumulate in the room.
