A tourist scattered the ashes of a deceased person at the St. Mark's basin on St. Mark's Square in Venice, thereby violating the lagoon city's municipal rules.
According to information from social media, the incident occurred at the St. Mark's basin, one of Venice's most famous landmarks directly in front of the Basilica di San Marco. A video circulating in Venice shows a woman pouring the contents of a container into the basin. A Venetian passer-by present reacted indignantly and asked the woman: "Bist du fertig?", before the recording ends.
The city of Venice and the Veneto region have established clear rules for the scattering of ashes in recent years. It is only permitted at designated locations, including specially marked "Gardens of Remembrance" at the cemeteries of San Michele, Mestre and Marghera, as well as on private properties outside built-up areas with the consent of the respective owner.
