Hamburg, 30 June 2026

Three police officers went on trial at the Hamburg district court (Amtsgericht Hamburg) accused of beating a man with batons and fists at the Bismarck Monument during the 2017 G20 summit protests, marking the first and only prosecution of officers from those events.

The proceedings, which opened on Tuesday, are the first of their kind arising from the July 2017 G20 summit, according to the public prosecutor's office. All 157 other investigation proceedings opened against police officers from the unrest were discontinued one after another. "Das Verfahren am Amtsgericht Hamburg ist laut Staatsanwaltschaft übrigens das erste dieser Art; alle weiteren gegen Beamte wurden demnach eingestellt," the prosecution said.
