Hamburg, July 8, 2026

The Hamburg District Court on Wednesday sentenced three police officers to fines for an attack on a demonstrator during the 2017 G20 summit; the sentences are deemed already served due to the lengthy proceedings.

The case is considered the only trial in which, following the severe riots around the G20 summit in Hamburg in July 2017, police officers were prosecuted judicially for their own violent actions. As a court spokesperson announced on Wednesday, the Hamburg District Court found three officers aged 38, 44, and 48 guilty of joint dangerous bodily injury while in office. The verdict is the outcome of a proceeding that came to a close almost nine years after the incidents at the Bismarck Monument above the Landungsbrücken in the St. Pauli district.
