Truck collides with tram in Linz – multiple injuries and closure of Wienerstraße

Public transport was also massively affected. At around 4:30 p.m., it was reported that the stops Neue Welt, Scharlinz, Wahringerstraße, and Wimmerstraße could not be served by replacement buses due to the closure of Wienerstraße. Passengers had to use alternative routes.

Trams from the Kleinmünchen depot were also unable to reach the affected section of track. The Linz transport operator attempted to maintain operations via secondary routes where possible.

Background: Wienerstraße as a traffic artery

Wienerstraße is one of the most important connecting roads in Linz and leads, among other places, toward Ebelsberg. The closure of the B1 therefore caused widespread traffic disruptions in the late afternoon.

Police, fire department, and rescue services were deployed in a large-scale operation to secure the accident site, treat the injured, and recover the damaged tram car.

Cause of the accident and investigations

There were no confirmed findings on the cause of the accident by late afternoon. Investigations into how the collision between the truck and the tram could have occurred have been initiated.

Residents and commuters were asked to avoid the area around Wienerstraße extensively until the closure could be lifted.

Residents of Linz and commuters from the surrounding area had to expect significant delays on Tuesday evening. When the B1 and the tram line could be fully reopened remained initially unclear.
