The Trump administration, under the leadership of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has rescinded the climate protection requirements for US power plants that were introduced in 2024 and had obligated coal and new gas power plants to reduce their emissions.
The EPA, led by Lee Zeldin, has withdrawn the climate protection rules for US power plants that had been issued under the Biden administration. As multiple US media outlets report, the repeal particularly affects coal power plants and newly built gas power plants. The previous standards had required these facilities to either significantly reduce their CO2 emissions or capture approximately 90 percent of their CO2 output by 2032 using carbon capture technology.
